Tile shopping for a bathroom remodel can get stressful, people. There are just SO many tile options in the world (which is why it’s brilliant to hire a designer to help you out with that process… We’re like tile whisperers! *Wink Wink*). Let me show you how to choose bathroom tile that you’ll love for years to come:
1. Choose Your Accent Tile First:
This is the tile that will go on the back of your shower niches, possibly shower floor or maybe even on your backsplash behind the bathroom sink if you so desire. This will set the tone for the rest of the bathroom. It’s a major jumping off point for your whole bathroom design scheme, so pick something that really speaks to you! Go with your gut and commit once you find something that makes you “Oo and Aah”. The rest will follow.
2. Choose Your Shower Wall Tile:
I usually like to pick a solid color shower tile to allow your accent tile to really shine. Contrast is queen here, so if you have a medium to dark toned accent tile, choose something light and bright. If your accent tile is light, darker wall tile can be stunning! We also don’t want anything that feels cluttered or distracting. Folks usually use their shower time to decompress and chill out, so make sure your design feels clean and relaxing and not too busy. Think “Spa”!
3. Choose Your Floor Tile:
How much do YOU love cleaning grout lines? Because I’ll be honest… I think cleaning grout is my least favorite house chore. For this reason, I tend to go for dirt hiding, large surface area tiles (AKA fewer grout lines) that can be easily mopped and still look clean and new! Generally, picking a tile that is in the same color family as your shower wall tile, OR matching a tone within your accent tile will do the trick. (i.e. If you have a beautiful mosaic tile, choosing one color from that mosaic to match your flooring to will be a sure-fire win.)
Here is an example of the altogether result of following this super simple tile selection process:
Voila!
Now, friends, this is only ONE simple way to go about tile selection, but if you’re feeling a little lost, this is a great way to re-focus and narrow down the options to find something you really love. And remember, you happen to have a designer friend who is just a phone call away if you’re ready to throw in the towel (pun very intended), and let someone else sort through that mountain of tile options for you.
Best of luck to you in all of your tile adventures!
Xoxo,
Alyssa
