Whew! What a decade 2020 has been, right my friends?! ; ) I can’t believe we’re almost to the end of it, and I have several lovely projects that I’ve been busy wrapping up to finish the year strong. I can’t wait to share them all with you! This particular “Colorado Cool House” makeover project has been an absolute blast to work on. It’s definitely one of those projects I was a little bit sad to part with at the end, but also SO happy for these clients who now get to enjoy their beautiful home.

About the Project:

This home belongs to a wonderful military couple, who, for the bulk of the design process were both deployed to different countries. It was an adventure Zoom-ing internationally to present their design plans and 3D home model. It turns out, 3D tours are SERIOUSLY helpful when the homeowner isn’t actually home to envision things in person! Through lots of emails and collaboration, we honed in on what their dream home would look like. We started out with these concept boards (below) and the rest is history. Follow along to see these concepts come to life…

These were the concept boards for the space. That color pallet is drool-worthy…

About the House:

This is a recently built spec home by a local builder from Colorado Springs and is located in a gorgeous neighborhood tucked into the foothills of the Rockies with both city and mountain views for days. As I’ve mentioned before, the thing about so many newly built homes these days is that while they’re often beautiful and fresh and clean, they lack character. Adding texture, movement and personality are SO important in these types of homes. I made sure to incorporate plenty of organic lines, materials, and textures to bring balance and compliment the house’s beautiful surroundings.

Telling the homeowners’ story is also incredibly important, so I made sure to bring in a few family heirloom pieces, such as the copper pot collection you’ll see on the shelves in the dining room. I really wanted to incorporate an artistic theme of mountains meeting the ocean since both clients are from coastal areas originally. You’ll see this reiterated throughout the home from the rusty-earth-toned powder blue accents here and there, as well as the landscape art pieces you’ll see styled on the shelves in the dining room.

About the Dining Room:

Dining Room Before…

Dining Room AFTER…

Speaking of organic textures, this STUNNING dining table was custom made by my super talented friend and maker, Koren Worley, founder of Well Rounded Goods. The table and bench are made from solid slabs of gorgeous walnut (no stain on this beauty – just sealer!). The live edge and beautiful grain add so much depth and interest to this space. We went with a tapered steel leg to lend a modern take as well. I also added classic Elbow replica chairs upholstered with a white vegan leather seat to bring some contrast to the mix.

We certainly can’t ignore the lighting in here. There used to be builder grade nickel-finish fixtures throughout and we made sure to change that. New milk glass globe pendants hung above the big island, along with that HUGE 32” diameter woven shade above the dining table give such a fantastic glow to the room and cozy things up instantly with the flip of a switch.

Last but not least in this space is the gorgeous hutch we found to fit this awkward little nook so perfectly. With the added picture lights above, it feels like it was always meant to be. The lighter wood tone is a brilliant contrast to the dark finishes surrounding it, and it also compliments the woven light shade and lighter wood accents you’ll see in the living room. Who doesn’t love a good shelf (or several) to decorate?!

About the Living Room:

Living Room Before…

Living Room AFTER…

The living room was such a fun space to work on! I LOVE how cozy and smushy all of the seating is in here. Don’t you just want to curl up on that sofa?! I’m not sure I’d ever leave…

The concrete coffee table adds the perfect contrast to the squishy nature of the surrounding furniture, and its smooth finish is brilliant next to the stone on the fireplace. It brings the perfect sleek and sophisticated edge and balance.

The TV used to be located above the fireplace (see the before photo), which is often not only aesthetically unpleasing, it’s also a literal pain in the neck and not very functional at that height. The solution was to put a Samsung Frame TV next to the fireplace on a mount that pulls out from the wall and swivels left and right to make viewing easier from multiple vantage points in the space. To replace the TV, we found some amazing white, sculptural art pieces that pop right out (literally and figuratively) from the earthy stone on the fireplace. I LOVE the contrast and scale it brings!

The cutest-ever channeled leather bench perfectly fits along the railing, offering extra functionality to an otherwise dead space. Benches are always great to have around in case you need to add extra seating to a conversation area, dining area, etc.
